Plastic bags, paper bags, mindless consumption

| More
taromuse I have to say, I have been guilty of mindless, blind consumption for decades. Now that I'm more aware, and I always thought--growing up in the counter culture of the 60's and 70's--that I WAS aware, I see that it is a constant, continuing practice. My daughter, a Greenpeacer to the bone, told me about a glob of plastic bags the size of TEXAS that are floating around the bottom of the ocean. I carry green bags everywhere now. if I go into a store,  and realize i've forgotten, I either buy one, don't make my purchase or go back to the car and get the ones I keep there. I LOVE doing this little thing. Is there anyway to educate consumers while they're in line at the grocery store? Is it legal to put up signs or a poster or have a "green" volunteer to do a presentation one afternoon? People, I think, want to do better and wake up. Trouble is, most of us don't even know we're sleeping. Peace and a prayer for the planet, JIll Siler,

About Me

Hey Everyone! A bow to all of you who are motivated in making a difference by slowing the parasitical consumption of an already ravaged planet. A bow to you, who are raising the consciousness of those of us who need awakened, educated, informed and, in some cases, stopped and held accountable. I'm a late comer to many environmental issues, as my generation was consumed with other dilemmas: politics, equal rights, ending the Other War, and dodging bullets at legal demonstrations, but now I feel this urgency to hurry, hurry, hurry and do all I can. Though I always felt like i'd witnessed a murder when an old tree fell under the whir-r-r and buzz-zz of a steel blade, and hated the ever-present litter of endless plastic bags, I rarely said no to them until  my daughter began telling me about what' they're doing in the oceans. Painful as it may be, I want to WAKE UP and everyday make a choice to be more mindful in my consumption. My friend told me about her Asheville-ean son and daughter-in-law, who made a vow to go for one year without purchasing ANYTHING NEW. Nothing. Nada. Zip. AND they have two children, one of them a little baby. Now THAT's what I call FIERCE! Shine it on Molly and Joel! peace, Jill
