Ah, summer--everything is so warm, vibrant, and so green. Truly, summer is my favorite time of year along with almost everyone else. Every year when Memorial Day, the “unofficial” first weekend of summer, approaches I try to set aside from time to think about how I can make this the best summer ever. My typical brain storm consists of lists of concerts, joining a kick ball league, and going to barbecues, but this summer I decided to do something different: work. I know, I know, working in the summer--just thinking about it makes many people cringe. But, for me, this is different. This summer I am working as a fellow for the Change It! 2008 program. I’m working ‘behind the scenes’ to ensure that this year’sChange It! will be the best yet!
Working for Greenpeace is one of the best opportunities that I have come across since graduating last year. In September I came on the Greenpeace team as an intern for Project Hot Seat and fell in love with the organization as a whole. The political actions, the people, the movement-- Greenpeace has all the ingredients for an amazing workplace. When my internship was winding down I didn’t travel far, moving on to participate in the GOT (Grassroots Organizing Term), an action-packed semester long training program in grassroots organizing. The program ran until the end of April and I just wasn’t ready to say good bye to Greenpeace.
So, here I am helping with the planning of Change It ! and loving life. In my defense I may be “working” this summer, but is it really considered work if I love it? Sure, I’ll miss out on one or two summer time barbecues, but, like I said, I wanted to do something different this summer. I wanted to make a difference and I know I’m not alone.
Cheers!
